Myringotomy, also referred to as ear tube surgery, is a medical intervention aimed at addressing middle ear issues. This surgical procedure entails creating a small incision in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) to alleviate pressure caused by an excessive buildup of fluid or to drain pus from the middle ear.
A tympanostomy tube may be placed through the eardrum to maintain aeration in the middle ear for an extended duration and prevent the reaccumulation of fluid. In the absence of a tube, the incision typically heals on its own within two to three weeks. Depending on the type, the tube either naturally falls out within 6 to 12 months or is removed in a minor procedure.

Myringotomy is a surgical intervention primarily performed to relieve pressure and drain accumulated fluid from the middle ear. It is typically recommended for conditions such as chronic otitis media with effusion or recurring ear infections.
The procedure for myringotomy surgery involves several steps. Preceding the surgery, general anesthesia is administered, and the ear and its surrounding area are thoroughly cleansed. During the surgery, a small incision is carefully made in the lower part of the eardrum, and any gathered fluid or pus is removed using a tube.
Following the removal of fluid, and depending on the specific condition and the surgeon’s discretion, a myringotomy tube (also known as a grommet or tympanostomy tube) may be inserted into the incision to maintain proper ventilation and prevent future fluid accumulation. Typically, the incision heals naturally over time, while the tube remains in place for several months. Once the tube has served its purpose and the middle ear has healed, it is naturally expelled (falls out) without intervention.
