What is

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a less invasive procedure primarily utilized to restore normal sinus function and airflow. During FESS, a physician employs slender nasal endoscopes equipped with lights and lenses to alleviate sinus-related symptoms without making incisions in or around the nasal area. This surgery can be conducted on an outpatient basis, either under general or local anesthesia. It’s also referred to as endoscopic sinus surgery. The risk of complications associated with FESS is lower compared to traditional sinus surgery.

FESS surgery is an excellent choice if conventional medications and antibiotic treatments haven’t provided relief for chronic sinusitis. Additionally, it’s recommended for conditions such as enlarged nasal turbinates, persistent sinusitis for over three months, and a deviated nasal septum.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is typically conducted on an outpatient basis and typically lasts around 2 hours. The surgery usually takes place under general anesthesia. After administering the anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a nasal endoscope through the patient’s nose. This endoscope is equipped with a light, camera, and surgical instruments that aid in clear visualization of the surgical area and facilitate the surgical procedure. Once all the diseased and infected bone, cartilage tissue, and polyps obstructing the sinuses have been removed, the incision is then closed using stitches and nasal packing.
