What is

Adenoidectomy surgery involves the removal of the adenoids, which are small glands situated at the back of the throat behind the nose. This surgical procedure effectively eliminates the adenoids, leading to an improvement in recurring nasal symptoms and nasal obstructions. Typically, the surgery is conducted on an outpatient basis, with the patient under general anesthesia. Post-surgery complications are exceedingly rare and generally minimal. Occasionally, patients may experience some postoperative pain, which can be easily alleviated by consuming cold or icy foods.

Procedure of

An adenoidectomy is typically performed by an ENT surgeon while the patient is under general anesthesia. The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis.

The removal of adenoids usually occurs through the mouth. The surgeon uses a small instrument to hold the mouth open. Subsequently, the adenoids are extracted by either creating a minor incision or cauterizing the area using a heated device.

To manage bleeding during and after the surgery, the surgeon may cauterize the area and place absorbent material, like gauze, as a packing. Stitches are typically not necessary.

Following the procedure, the patient remains in a recovery room until they regain consciousness.
