A mastoidectomy is a surgical intervention aimed at removing affected mastoid air cells, a part of the skull situated behind the ear. These air cells resemble a honeycomb and are made of bone. Typically, diseased cells result from the extension of an ear infection into the skull. Additionally, mastoidectomy is beneficial for eliminating abnormal ear growth, known as cholesteatoma.

The uniqueness of each mastoidectomy procedure lies in the varying pneumatization patterns of the temporal bone. Primary reasons for conducting mastoidectomy encompass acute mastoiditis, chronic mastoiditis and its subsequent complications, along with cases of cholesteatoma. Furthermore, mastoidectomy can be performed concurrently with tympanostomy tube placement for individuals experiencing complications from chronic or acute otitis media. This surgical approach also proves essential for various otological procedures, such as labyrinthectomy, facial nerve surgery, cochlear implantation, addressing petrous apex lesions, managing lateral skull base tumors, and conducting endolymphatic sac surgery..

Procedure of
Mastoidectomy surgery is conducted within an operating room by a skilled ENT surgeon, utilizing an operating microscope. Typically, the procedure is performed under the influence of general anesthesia. In the case of a straightforward mastoidectomy, the surgeon gains access to the mastoid bone through a precisely placed incision made behind the ear, aiming to minimize potential scarring.
Subsequently, the surgeon employs specialized instruments and a microscope to carefully open the mastoid bone, maintaining a clean area by utilizing the suction irrigation technique to manage bone dust. Following this, the infected air cells within the mastoid bone are meticulously removed, and the surgical site is sutured. The surgeon dresses the surgical wound with gauze to ensure cleanliness and dryness. Occasionally, a facial nerve monitor may be employed during the procedure to minimize the risk of facial nerve injury. Typically, a straightforward mastoidectomy surgery is completed within a duration of 2-3 hours.
