What is

Septoplasty, also known as septal resection or septal reconstruction surgery, is a specialized procedure designed to reshape, straighten, and realign the nasal septum. The nasal septum is the cartilaginous structure that divides the space between the nostrils.

During this surgery, skilled surgeons carefully cut and remove specific sections of the nasal septum before meticulously repositioning them to restore proper alignment. Septoplasty is typically recommended for individuals with a severely deviated nasal septum, a condition that can obstruct and redirect airflow on one or both sides of the septum, resulting in difficulties with breathing.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis process for septoplasty surgery involves a combination of physical examination and imaging tests. Initially, the ENT doctor will gather your medical history to assess any existing breathing issues. Subsequently, a speculum will be employed to inspect your nostrils, allowing the doctor to gauge the extent and intricacy of the septal deviation.

Following the physical examination, the patient may require an X-ray to aid in the assessment of their nasal bone structure and to confirm the complexity of the deviation. Additionally, a nasal endoscopy might be conducted. In this procedure, the surgeon inserts an endoscope—a device with a light and an attached camera—through the nostrils to visualize the internal structures and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Surgery process

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the correction of the nasal septum by reshaping, repositioning, and, if necessary, replacing the bone or cartilage that makes up the septum. In modern medicine, septoplasty is typically carried out with minimal invasiveness and a low risk of complications.

The choice of anesthesia, whether local or general, depends on the complexity of the surgery and whether it is combined with other procedures such as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) or tonsillectomy. To access the cartilage and bone within the septum, the surgeon makes a small incision. In cases involving a bony deviation, portions of the bone are carefully removed, and the void is filled with graft tissues.

After realigning and fortifying the septal structures, the incision is closed using absorbable sutures. Silicone splints are inserted into both nostrils to provide support to the septum. Additionally, nasal packing, acting as bandages, is placed within the nose to manage bleeding.

Septoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home on the same day. However, before traveling or engaging in strenuous activities, patients should seek approval from their ENT surgeon and attend regular postoperative follow-up appointments.
